When we start to look at cable television and what is available in that media, it is not hard to see why the demand for something actually worth watching is increasing. Be it another ‘reality’ show about three legged horses swimming in celebrity bird baths, or, the not so ‘Real Housewives of Lethbridge’ to some other show to watch people buy properties in faraway places, the fare provided in by regular television has diminished to the entertainment of the brain dead. As far as ‘reality’ shows go, there is actually only one legitimate one on television, it is called professional sports. This is where the outcome is always in question and the participants are actually competing for something tangible; in this case a championship.
The advent of companies like Netflix has allowed people to actually pick and choose their entertainment choices. Not only can they choose the shows, but they can further choose the times and days they want to watch them. They can choose the amount they see; be it a single episode, or, binge watch a complete season. In our day and age of instant access to what we want when we want it, it seems that streaming is fast becoming the wave of the future and that cable even though not quite dead yet, is definitely on life support.
The two articles here, along with the video with Kevin Spacey, clearly shows the rise of this phenomenon and Kevin himself gives a clear reasoning as to why it is working and cable has no one to blame but itself. With HBO now joining the streaming network, it will not take much longer for the other of the major cable networks to join the life streaming realm and I can see that in the very near future, we will have to ‘pull the plug’ on cable. Maybe then, housewives will return to normality and the utter nonsense and narcissistic people that have had more than their 15 minutes of fame can fade away into oblivion.
