This is one of the most brilliant Ted Talks I have ever seen and brings to the forefront of what technology is all about. The correlation between the six kingdoms of species on earth and how it has evolved through time and bringing it to a parallel to the evolution of technology through history is fascinating. Who would of ever thought to actually group technology with biology and not only make it clear and to the point, but also make you go: ‘Wait, I’m beginning to see it.’ His Ted’s comment: ‘You can delay it, but you can’t kill it.’, is further exemplified by the simple fact of the speed that human knowledge is doubling today. It has been estimated that human knowledge in 2014 doubled in 13 months and it is predicted that in 2020, it will only take 12 hours. There is no way that it can ever be killed and at the rate that it is expanding, knowledge, I further believe that we cannot even delay it any more. It was with fascination that when Mr. Kelly did the exercise of taking an old catalogue page or what would be by most to be obsolete and extinct technology, that in fact everything in that page was still being produced today. Certainly, newer versions, but regardless, still being produced. The end thought on that is that you can actually ‘build a better mousetrap.’
The different definitions used in the Talk, and I will spoil it for you, is a must listen to. The argument that technology has now become the seventh kingdom of species in the evolutionary progress of us as a human species and of the history of the earth is brought together by the challenge and homework that Kevin Kelly puts forward at the end. This Ted Talk, it is my belief, should be a must see for anyone taking a course such as PIDP 3240. I sure wish that I had seen this Talk years ago, as I believe that I would have a different view of what technology is and what it is doing.
As a result of watching this video, which I would not have seen if it was not for doing research for this course and specifically for this assignment, I may never have started the ‘critical reflective’ process as it pertains to my relationship with technology.
