End of last week, I was speaking with a colleague and he was ranting and raving about technology and how he would never use it. His cell phone went off and he had to excuse himself, as he was waiting for an important call. Once he hung up, he told me that he would be just a minute as he had to send a text to his daughter. I told him not to worry and started doing an email on my phone.
When he was done, he looked at me and said: ‘Where were we?’ To which I replied, ‘You were talking about how you would never use technology and you are going to reject it to the end of your life.’ I then asked him: ‘Do you need to get that email?’ His phone had beeped signifying an incoming email. He took it out, read the email and just stared at me.
The email was the one that I had sent him while he texted his daughter and said: ‘So you are not going to use technology?’
Technology is defined as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Further, it goes on to state that it is machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge. Therefore, technology is all around us and we use it every day. At one time, as it was reminded to me by the president of a private college: ‘Pencils, were once a technological breakthrough and we use them without even thinking about it.’ In the case of my colleague, the cell phone has become such a common practice in our everyday world, that we no longer consider it a technological advancement tool. Think about it, for some of us of a certain age, it really has not been around that long and we remember the time that staying in touch meant having a pocketful of quarters. Think about this, there are more cell phones in India than toilets according to the World Health Organization.
You may not want to embrace technology, but you have no choice but to accept and live with it. Sure you may not want to get involved with all that it has to offer, but you will use what makes sense to you.
Therefore, don’t rant and rave, but instead, use what you need and if you don’t, you may want to know it’s there, but nobody is telling you to use it. Instead accept it, it’s here to stay, but you don’t have to embrace it.
